Summary

Fragmentary linear ditches (and a bank), of uncertain date and origin, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. They lie a short distance (some 60m) to the east of an excavation carried out by Wainwright in 1971 (NHER 9544). Some of the ditches share their orientation with elements of the Late Iron Age to Roman period field system/enclosures identified during the excavations and may be contemporary.

Full Description

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Fragmentary linear ditches and a bank, of uncertain date and origin, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 2111 0604. They lie a short distance (some 60m) to the east of an excavation carried out by Wainwright in 1971 (NHER 9544), and some share their orientation with elements of the Late Iron Age to Roman period field system/enclosures identified during the excavations (Wainwright 1973 (S4)). Others display a different orientation and may represent a different phase of activity. All are likely to post-date the Bronze Age round barrows they surround (NHER 53270-1), and to pre-date the World War Two anti-landing trenches (NHER 53254) also visible in this area (although for there to have been some confusion with elements relating to the latter site is highly possible). Not all of the features are of certain archaeological significance; some could instead relate to recent agricultural activity.
