Map

July 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The site of two World War Two bomb craters is visible on aerial photographs to the south of Martineau Lane, Norwich (S1-S2). This site is centred on TG 2369 0631, although it must be noted that the craters are only mapped approximately from (S3), but which time they were already considerably re-vegetated and therefore the actual impact area may have been considerably larger. It is likely that these craters are the result of the two large bombs that fell on marshland near Lakenham Swimming Baths in May 1941 (S4). The bombs may have caused damage to the Villa Gardens public house (NHER 40553) which was recorded as having been destroyed by bombing in 1941. Although aerial photographs indicate that the building was still standing in 1945 (S3), so presumably just irredeemably damaged rather than destroyed.
