Summary

The site of a temporary World War Two military site is visible on aerial photographs in 1942 within the extension to Rosary Cemetery, Norwich. The site consists of possible temporary structures and/or tents along the northern and eastern edge of the site, a possible spigot mortar emplacement and a slit trench to the south, and a bomb crater. The majority of this site is really only apparent on aerial photographs from 1942, which, due to the poor quality of the copies available, are not particularly conducive to the clear recognition and interpretation of structures and small earthworks. Therefore none of these possible structures are identified within any great level of certainty. It is therefore worth noting that the area to the immediate south of the site is being used as allotments and it is therefore possible that some of the possible mounds and structures and signs of recent activity relate to that aspect of the landuse and not a military site. The site appears to have been largely removed by 1944, although traces of some components, such as the bomb crater, remain in 1946.

The site, which is centred on TG 2456 0853, consists of possible temporary structures and/or tents along the northern and eastern edge of the site, a possible spigot mortar emplacement and a slit trench to the south, and a bomb crater. The majority of this site is really only apparent on aerial photographs from 1942 (S1-S2), which, due to the poor quality of the copies available, are not particularly conducive to the clear recognition and interpretation of structures and small earthworks. It is therefore worth noting that the area to the immediate east of the site is being used as allotments and it is therefore possible that some of the possible mounds and structures and signs of recent activity relate to that aspect of the landuse and not a military site. The site appears to have been largely removed by 1944 (S4), although traces of some components, such as the bomb crater, remain in 1946 (S3).
