Summary

The site of a World War Two camp situated at the former Nelson Cavalry Barracks, Norwich. The site consists of military buildings and huts, visible from 1942 onwards, to the north of the main historic barrack buildings, plus a small group within the central courtyard to the south, which date to between the 1942-5. A series of earthen-covered semi-sunken and underground air raid shelters are visible along the eastern edge of the site (S3), as are a series of zig-zag and castellated slit trenches in 1942. On the northeastern tip of the site is a small shooting/firing range, which appears to date to sometime after April 1942. Another nearby firing range has been recorded under NHER 54254. Some components of the site remain extant or semi-extant into the 1950s and 1960s. However the Heathgate Estate has been constructed over much of the northern part of the site by 1968.

The site of a World War Two camp situated at the former Nelson Cavalry Barracks, Norwich (S1-S4). The site, which is centred on TG 2396 0944, consists of military buildings and huts, visible from 1942 onwards (S1-S3), to the north of the main historic barrack buildings, plus a small group within the central courtyard to the south, which date to between the 1942-5 (S1-S3). A series of earthen-covered semi-sunken and underground air raid shelters are visible along the eastern edge of the site (S3), as are a series of zig-zag and castellated slit trenches in 1942 (S1-S2). On the northeastern tip of the site is a small shooting/firing range, which appears to date to sometime after April 1942 (S1-S3). Another nearby firing range has been recorded under NHER 54254. Some components of the site remain extant or semi-extant into the 1950s and 1960s. However the Heathgate Estate has been constructed over much of the northern part of the site by 1968 (S4). It is unlikely that any the structural components of the site survive, although it is feasible that some elements of the semi-sunken air raid shelter at TG 2406 0935 could remain sub-surface.
