Summary

A World War Two road block is evident as a group of structures visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The road block consisted of two double rows of sockets in the road surface, into which anti-tank pins or rails could be placed. On their northwest side these were flanked by two large concrete anti-tank cubes. The road block was sited to control access across Cringleford Bridge (NHER 9370) to its immediate southwest, and is one of numerous such defences erected around the outskirts of Norwich during this period. It is not known whether any trace of the site still survives today.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two road block is visible as a group of structures on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 1999 0597. It was sited to control access across Cringleford Bridge (NHER 9370) which lies to its immediate southwest, and was one of numerous such defences to be erected around the outskirts of Norwich during the period.
In 1945 (S2) the road block consisted of two double rows of sockets in the surface of the road into which anti-tank rails or pins could be placed (only the sockets are visible; they have been mapped collectively using ‘Extent of Area’). To their northwest these were flanked by two large concrete anti-tank cubes; whether any once lay to the southeast of the road sockets is not clear. Whether any element of the site still survives today is also not known; a trial hole excavated to investigate the bridge (NHER 9370) was located too far to the southwest to throw any light upon the current condition of the road block (S4).
