Summary

The earthworks of a late nineteenth century to early twentieth century firing range, consisting of two shooting butts, are visible on aerial photographs. The shooting buts are depicted on the Ordnance Survey second edition map (1902-7), although the aerial photographs indicate the earthworks were more extensive than map suggests. This site is depicted as extraction area and made up ground on the Ordnance Survey first edition map (1889 to 1891), suggesting that the shooting butts are either late nineteenth century to early twentieth century in date, rather than post medieval.

Map

July 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a late nineteenth century to early twentieth century firing range, consisting of two shooting butts, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 2491 0710. The shooting buts are depicted on the Ordnance Survey second edition map (1902-7) (S4), although the aerial photographs indicate the earthworks were more extensive than map suggests. Other related earthworks and structures may be visible, but nothing clear enough to warrant mapping This site is depicted as extraction area and made up ground on the Ordnance Survey first edition map (1889 to 1891) (S5), suggesting that the shooting butts are either late nineteenth century to early twentieth century in date, rather than post medieval. The oblong pit-like, sunken features mapped within the eastern part of site are likely to relate to this former extraction at the site.
S. Horlock (NMP), 01 July 2010.
