NHER 54757 (Building record) - Former Drill Hall, York Road

The York Road drill hall was designed by J.T. Bottle in 1867 as the base for the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Norfolk Regiment with a rear block being added in 1885. The building comprises of a residential block, the drill hall and the rear block containing offices and store rooms. The front of the building is of the Gothic revival style with a facing of uncoursed knapped flint with dressings of red brick, yellow brick and ashlar. The interior of the hall have curved laminated trusses and a simple frame with projecting arrow-shaped finials. The use of gilding would have further enhanced the interior's design. Although the drill hall was constructed for a rifle division there appears to be no firing range. It is possible that an external range was used and the only space nearby of a suitable size is St Peter's Plain to the south. The hall was designated as a Grade II listed building in January 2010.
