Summary

A Watching Brief in 2010 revealed no archaeological finds or features. The natural gravels and sands were however found to be overlain by fibrous peat deposits; similar to those encountered at the Carrow Road Upper Palaeolithic site (NHER 26602). The peats were overlain by a dark grey silt deposit containing at least one well defined layer of crushed chalk - material interpreted as consolidation of the river bank at this location.

Map

March-April 2010. Watching brief.
Monitoring of coffer dam excavated ahead of the lay down of a new electricity supply cable across the River Wensum.
Gravels and sands were present at a depth of 3.2m below the surface with fibrous and amorphous peats overlying these deposits. This peat deposit is comparable to geological deposits encountered at the Carrow Road site (NHER 26602) where in situ scatters of Upper Palaeolithic worked flint lay at the interface of sands and gravels sealed by early Holocene peats (c.12,000 BC). This highlights the potential for archaeological deposits and environmental remains of prehistoric date to survive along the northern bank of the River Wensum.
Overlaying the peats was a dark grey silt deposit 1.5m deep containing at least one well defined layer of crushed chalk interpreted as consolidation of the river bank at this location.
