Full Description
April 2010. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 September 2015.
May 2010. Aerial Photograph Interpretation.
Examination of proposed development site.
No definite archaeological features were observed but there was a scatter of possible features in the north-east corner of the site that could indicate buried pits.
See report (S2) for further details.
S. Howard (NLA), 11 August 2010.
July 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
The larger, northernmost field displayed the least magnetic noise but the only responses of note were three linear anomalies likely to represent land drains.
Numerous discrete magnetic anomalies scattered across the other fields had probably been caused by ferrous objects on or close to the surface (most likely modern debris).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 May 2023.
June 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The ten trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of ditches and several discrete features, the majority of which produced no dating evidence. The ditches included a reasonably substantial west-north-west to east-south-east aligned feature at the western end of the southernmost field that contained small fragments of ceramic building material. A number of narrower, north-west to south-east aligned ditches or gullies were recorded in the eastern central part of the site. These features produced no dating evidence and none correspond with former boundaries depicted on the available 19th-century maps. It is though thought they were probably of relatively recent date. Samples taken from three of these ditch were found to contain only small fragments of charcoal.
Finds were limited to a single sherd of late post-medieval pottery and a post-medieval roof tile, both of which were recovered from a large feature interpreted as an infilled pond that was partially exposed at the southern end of the site. The small number of other features recorded included a single post-hole and a number of probable tree-throw hollows.
See report (S4) for further details.
