Summary

World War Two anti landing trenches and a subsequent barrage balloon site are visible on aerial photographs in West Earlham, just to the west of the line of Norwich’s anti tank ditch (NHER 51893).

World War Two anti landing trenches and a subsequent barrage balloon site are visible on aerial photographs in West Earlham, just to the west of the line of Norwich’s anti tank ditch (NHER 51893).
The anti landing trenches, in the form of a hexagon and adjacent parallelogram, with pits at each corner are visible as open earthworks, centred on TG 1896 0874 in 1940 (S1), but by 1943 (S2) have been filled in, and a barrage balloon with probable related structure is visible on the site, centred slightly to the north at TG 1902 0878.
