Full Description
August 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch, which may represent the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, is visible on aerial photographs to the south of The Homestead, Horsford (S1). The site, which is centred on TG 1924 1486, consists of a broad semi-circular cropmark, 30m in diameter, and potentially bisected by Drayton Lane. While it is possible that this relates to the site of a former round barrow, it is also feasible that this mark relates to an agricultural feature, such as a turning circle or an arc of differentially applied fertiliser. However the mark is not adjacent to an entrance field entrance, as might be expected given the positioning of possible turning circle or fertiliser mark, and has a similar appearance to other broad and blurry cropmarks in the field that were assumed to relate to underlying geological features. It must also be noted that the feature was only visible on one aerial photograph and that no stereo pair was available making accurate identification of the cause of this cropmark hard.
S. Horlock (NMP), 12 August 2010.
