Summary

The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch, potentially representing the remains of a round barrow, but could equally be a fungal ring or similar non-archaeological feature, is visible on aerial photographs to the east of Brickyard Farm, Horsford. The possible ring ditch is visible as a circular vegetation mark on grass. The archaeological origin of this mark is extremely uncertain. Although a similar sized ring ditch recorded approximately 250m to the northeast (NHER 17476) has been interpreted as possibly relating to a postmill. A trial trench excavated across the location of this cropmark in 2011 revealed no evidence for associated sub-surface remains (see NHER 55849).

Full Description

August 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch, potentially representing the remains of a round barrow, but could equally be a fungal ring or similar non-archaeological feature, is visible on aerial photographs to the east of Brickyard Farm, Horsford (S1). The ring ditch, which is centred on TG 1947 1326, is visible as a circular vegetation mark on grass, 12m in diameter. The archaeological origin of this mark is extremely uncertain. Although a similar sized ring ditch recorded approximately 250m to the northeast (NHER 17476) has been interpreted as possibly relating to a postmill.

August-September 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of large proposed development area.
A trench placed across the site of this possible ring-ditch revealed a north-west to south-east aligned ditch. This feature was however some distance from the recorded location of the cropmark and therefore probably unrelated.
