Summary

The cropmarks of a small square enclosure of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs within the former parkland surrounding Stoke Hall (NHER 9766). It is possible that this enclosure relates to the pre-park layout as it follows a similar alignment to boundaries marked on the 1844 Stoke Holy Cross Tithe map (S2), that pre-date the current Stoke Hall and the associated mid nineteenth century park layout.

Map

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a small square enclosure of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1) within the former parkland surrounding Stoke Hall (NHER 9766). The site is centred on TG 2392 0090. It is possible that this enclosure relates to the pre-park layout as it follows a similar alignment to boundaries marked on the 1844 Stoke Holy Cross Tithe map (S2), that pre-date the current Stoke Hall and the associated mid nineteenth century park layout. The enclosure measures approximately 21m across and has rounded corners. Although the sides of the enclosure run parallel to the crop tramlines, they are not entirely concurrent with them, suggesting that the marks are not agricultural in origin.
