Full Description
March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a small square enclosure and associated ditches, possibly representing the remains of former field boundaries and enclosures of Iron Age to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) to the southeast of Holy Cross Church within the former parkland surrounding Stoke Hall (NHER 9766). The site is centred on TG 2363 0070. The site consists of a number of ditches, one of which has a small, conjoined enclosure, approximately 4m square. This ditch turns to the west, perhaps indicating that it defines the edge of a field or larger enclosure. These cropmarks show no obvious relationship to either the pre-park boundaries within Stoke Hall parkland (NHER 14240) or the late Saxon to medieval settlement cropmarks to the west (NHER 51984). It is therefore assumed that they are pre-medieval in date. A number of Iron Age and Roman finds have been recovered from this general area, for example NHER 24332, perhaps indicating that the ditches mapped could date to this period.
