Summary

The site of a possible World War Two defensive structure, such as a pillbox, may be visible on aerial photographs at the Costessey Lane road junction on the parish boundary between Drayton and Costessey. A possible structure is visible in 1942-4, although due to the clarity of the available scans of the aerial photographs it was hard to be identify any height to the possible ‘structure’ with any degree of certainty. By 1946 a light coloured area of disturbance approximately 6m across is visible. It is possible that this feature relates to a recently removed defensive structure, although it could equally be that this is all that is visible on the earlier aerial photographs. Due to this level of uncertainty, and the fact that a structure could not definitively be identified, no mapping was undertaken at this site.
