Summary

The remains of an extractive pit observed during fieldwalking in 2010. Examination of the pit revealed a vaulted tunnel likely constructed of chalk block. The remains are believed to be associated with a former lime kiln.

April 2010. Field Observation while fieldwalking.
Remains of an extraction pit were observed whilst fieldwaking.
The pit contained a subterranean structure comprising a well-constructed, semi-circular smooth vaulted tunnel made from what appears to be chalk block. The extractive pit and structure may be remains of a lime kiln. The location is marked as a kiln on the First Edition Ordnance Survey six inch map (S1).
