Full Description
September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of field boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Costessey village (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 1730 1128. None of these boundaries are depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition map (1889 -1891, 6 inch) (S3) and no Tithe map is available for the area of the site, however it seems likely that the boundaries are broadly post medieval in date. Finds in the area include material of Saxon to Post medieval date (NHER 16427-8, 29502, 33413), including some medieval pottery, which could indicate a medieval, or medieval to post medieval, date for the cropmarks. A number of fragmentary ditches also included within this site may represent earlier ditches of unknown date.
S. Horlock (NMP), 07 September 2010.
