Full Description
September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, which may be probable former field boundaries of possible prehistoric date are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Lodge Farm Costessey (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 1654 1035. The fragmentary boundaries would appear to form a different phase to those recorded under NHER 31518, which have been tentatively interpreted as Iron Age, although a medieval to post medieval date is also a possibility.
Similarly aligned fragmented ditches to the west (NHER 54471) have been tentatively interpreted as being Bronze Age in date, see record for details. It is possible that these cropmarks are of a comparable date. These ditches are close to concentrations of Neolithic and Bronze Age worked flint and burnt flint, see records NHER 37646 and 39351 for details and discussion and a Later Bronze Age hoard has been recovered (NHER 16398) approximately 350m away. See also NHER 54471 for discussion of possible pits in this area, previously interpreted as prehistoric settlement, but may relate to tree hollows.
