Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches and field boundaries of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Fleet Road, Costessey. The site consists of fragmentary ditches and former field boundaries, the majority of which appear to pre-date the medieval to post medieval field pattern in this area. It must be noted that the area of this site contained numerous cropmarks which could confidently be interpreted as being geological in origin. Some of the possible ditches mapped could also relate to non-archaeological features, as in some areas it was hard to be certain. Cropmarks relating to post medieval field boundaries depicted on Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 -1891, 6 inch), or seeming to relate to the same phase, were omitted from the mapping.
