Summary

The cropmarks of enclosures and/or fields of unknown, but possibly Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs in the area of Place Farm, Taverham. The site consists of possible fragmentary conjoined rectilinear enclosures, although it is possible that they merely represent agricultural fields, and seemingly associated ditches and field boundaries following the same alignment. All of these features appear to pre-date the medieval to post medieval layout and are therefore likely to be earlier date. Finds in the area include material of Roman, Saxon and medieval date (NHER 7837 & 32286) and it is possible that these cropmarks represent Roman date enclosures and/or fields. Other cropmarks in this area have been recorded under NHER 54476-7 as they appeared to represent different or less coherent phases of fields and ditches.

The cropmarks of enclosures and/or fields of unknown, but possibly Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs in the area of Place Farm, Taverham (S1-S4). The site is centred on TG 1700 1277. It must be noted that the area of this site, in particular the western part, contained cropmarks which were omitted from the mapping due it being felt that they were of geological origin. Other cropmarks in this area have been recorded under NHER 54476-7 as they appeared to represent different or less coherent phases of fields and ditches.
