Full Description
September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible fragmentary field system of unknown, but possibly Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Bridge Cottage, Costessey Lane, Taverham (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 1724 1298. The site consists of probable fragmentary field boundaries, which would appear to form part of a field system of at least one phase. It must be noted that the aerial photographs revealed numerous broadly parallel linear cropmarks in this area that are obviously geological, in particular on (S2). Some of the ditches mapped share a similar alignment to these obviously non-archaeological marks, but they have been mapped as they seemed to stand out as being different and more convincingly archaeological. Finds in the area include material of Roman, Saxon and medieval date (NHER 7837 & 32286) and it is possible that this field system is in part Roman (or Saxon) in date, although this is not certain. Other cropmarks in this area have been recorded under NHER 54475, 54477 as they appeared to represent different or less coherent phases of fields and ditches.
