Full Description
September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a possible ring ditch or small circular enclosure of uncertain date and archaeological significance on the valley floor of the River Wensum at Costessey are visible on aerial photographs (S1). The site is centred on TG 1717 1179. The site consists of approximately two thirds of a ring ditch, 27m in diameter and up to 2m wide. A possible inner bank may be visible along the eastern arc of the ditch, although this was not completely convincing and was therefore not mapped. It may be that this ditch is more pronounced along this section, giving the impression of greater height to the ground in this section. The origin of these apparent earthworks is not certain. The location could indicate that it is an old meander of a former creek on the valley floor. However there is no definite sign of it being part of any of the visible channels and those depicted on historic maps. It is feasible that this ring ditch relates to a former Bronze Age round barrow, although no sign of an inner mound surviving was visible. It could also relate to a medieval to post medieval site on the valley floor, potentially providing drainage for structure or activity of some sort. It is not clear from later photography whether this feature survives as an earthwork.
