Full Description
September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Two possible World War Two surface shelters may be visible on aerial photographs alongside glass houses to the south of Costessey (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 1789 1129. Two entrances to underground shelters or structures are visible alongside two shed-like structures. Immediately adjacent to the entrances are two large and amorphous shaped mounds of material, possible soil, fertilizer or coal. If these structures were seen at the site of a large factory they would be recorded as probable underground air raid shelter constructed for the workers, however within this context the interpretation seems less certain. The presence of possible chimney at either end of the possible air raid shelters could indicate that the structures are actually associated with a heating system or waste incinerator for the glass houses.
S. Horlock (NMP), 01 September 2010.
