Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, the majority of which are likely to represent former field boundaries and a trackways of unknown date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of the former David Rice Hospital, Hellesdon. Finds in the area include material of Prehistoric, Roman and medieval date (NHER 16457, 20016, 20472 & 29694). The fragmentary cropmarks may therefore represent features dating to these periods. It must be noted that cropmarks of geological origin, and those apparently relating to relatively recent activity in the field, visible on the aerial photographs in this area were omitted from the mapping and that is feasible that some of the more fragmentary ditches mapped may also be non-archaeological in origin.

The site is centred on TG 1935 1243. Finds in the area include material of Prehistoric, Roman and medieval date (NHER 16457, 20016, 20472 & 29694). The fragmentary cropmarks may therefore represent features dating to these periods. The possible trackway to the southwest of the site was identified from a possible germination mark (S3) could feasibly relate to past movement in the field, however it was felt more likely to relate to an archaeological feature.
