Full Description
April 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of rectilinear enclosures, field boundaries and ditches of unknown, but possible Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Glebe Farm, Swainsthorpe (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 2152 0136. Although there are no finds directly related to the site, Roman material has been recovered from within the general vicinity of the site and this could indicate a Roman date for the enclosures (NHER 38065 & 40477).
The site consists of a group of fragmentary rectangular and rectilinear enclosures and/or enclosed fields, centred on TG 2154 0131 (S2). The northern enclosure and/or field potentially measures 65m by 40m. The southern component to the site would appear to represent the remains of a rectangular enclosure, 60m by at least 35m. The ditches of the enclosures are all broadly aligned the same, suggesting one phase, although the slight misalignment of the central elongated sub-rectilinear enclosure, measuring 30m by at least 55m, could suggest that this component represents a later phase of the site. Similarly aligned fragmentary boundaries are recorded to the north, centred on TG 2150 0144 (S1) and are likely to represent contemporary ditches.
