NHER 52149 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmarks of a small ring ditch of uncertain date and function, could be remains of an agricultural feature

The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Harford Farm, Caistor St Edmunds (S1). The possible ring ditch is centred on TG 2169 0433 and is 8m in diameter. This ring ditch is visible as a light coloured cropmark, but would appear to represent a ditched feature by comparison with other nearby ditches showing as light cropmarks on the same aerial photographs. The small size could indicate that it does not relate to a former Bronze Age round barrow, although this remains a possibility. Alternative interpretations include the remains of a later prehistoric roundhouse or, possibly more likely, an agricultural temporary structure, such as a stack stand of medieval to post medieval date.

January 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development area to west of Ipswich Road.
This survey revealed no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with this ring-ditch. It should though be noted that only part of the ring-ditch fell within the survey area and it lay close to a broad band of magnetic disturbance caused by a modern service. The site's magnetic susceptibility is also recorded as being generally low.
