NHER 52271 (Cropmark and Earthwork) - Possible vegetation marks of uncertain date and significance within the grounds of Caistor Hall

Possible vegetation marks of uncertain date and significance may be visible on aerial photographs (S4) within the grounds of Caistor Hall and to the east of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 9786). The cropmarks of a Roman building have previously been recorded as having been visible at this location and Roman date material (NHER 9859) has been recovered. The site is centred on TG 2350 0377 and consists of a small area of possible vegetation marks within one of the lawns. These marks, if archaeological, may reveal the presence of a number of ditches and a bank or street and could relate to the Roman settlement. However some uncertainty remains over the origin of these features as they could be the result of recent activity or mowing on the lawn. No conclusive sign of the previously recorded building was identified on the aerial photographs.
