Map

October 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A fragment of a possible enclosure is visible as a soilmark bank on aerial photographs (S4) on land to the west of The Street, Croxton.
It is centred on TL 8713 8708, and measures approximately 28m north-south and 42m east-west, and the bank itself measures up to approximately 4.9m wide. It lies within an area of Roman and Medieval finds (NHER 39433) and there are two further areas of Roman finds in the vicinity (NHER 16472 and 32742), which indicates that the feature may be Roman in date. It may, however, simply represent the extension of a field boundary on Chapel Farm, to the north.
Despite the fact that this possible enclosure is only visible on one set of photographs it is a clear soilmark and has therefore been mapped, albeit with a note of caution.
It is visible within an area of possible field boundaries, or larger enclosures, the western edge of which stretches from TL 8704 8719 to TL 8709 8700. These features are visible as earthworks on earlier photographs (S1-S3), but are likely to represent features contemporary with that described above. The features described above may in fact make up part of a medieval settlement site along with more extensive earthworks visible to the east (NHER 54584, 54595).
