Summary

In 1955 a medieval well was found during the process of rebuilding the Barn. It was made from mortar and flint chips and was about 1m below street level and extended to a depth of 5.5m. It probably dated to around 1350-1400.

1955. During rebuilding of Barn Tavern 15.2m (50ft) west of city wall and about 7.6m (25ft) east of east wall of Royal Cinema.
A round well of mortar and flint chips found 1.8m (5ft 9in) diameter, 23cm (9in) thick and about 5.5m (18ft) deep. Top 92cm (3ft) below modern surface level. Covered over with vaulting of red brick and mortar. Probably dating to around 1350-1400.
