Full Description
November 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of two fragmentary linear banks are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) on land within Kilverstone Heath.
They have been recorded due to the fact that they appear to be different in character to the numerous later trackways visible running across the heath, which have not been mapped. The north-south bank (S2) runs from TL 9069 8636 to TL 9078 8651 and may be a continuation of the possible road (NHER 54521) to the north east. It is also possible that this may be a section of the road to Illington shown on Fousoe's Map of 1742, reproduced by Alan Davison (S2). The bank running east-west (S1), from TL9054 8658 to TL 9077 8630, may be a section of the Croxton to Brettenham Road across the heath, depicted on the same map (S3). A number of braided trackways are also visible to the north and east (S4), but these have not been mapped.
E. Bales (NMP), 17 November 2010.
