Map

December 2010. Norfolk NMP.
An area of World War Two practice trenches is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5) to the west of Bury Road, Thetford. The site is centred on TL 8646 8188. The trenches are visible as a series of linear and crenelated ditches and upcast spoil. It is possible that they are not military in function, although their proximity to the possible underground storage site (NHER 54545) to the east, further practice trenches to the north (NHER 54542) suggests that they did perform a military function. In fact, those to the west are considered to be World War Two in date, and those to the east are more reminiscent of World War One trenches, but since they appear to be freshly dug are likely to date from World War Two, and may have been used by the American forces (Roger J C Thomas, pers comm.).
E. Bales (NMP), 15 December 2010.

February 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Brief assessment of the aerial photographs for the adjoining Brecks project area would suggest that at least some of the eastern components of these earthworks originate from post medieval and/or modern flint mining (S6).
S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 20th February 2017.
