Full Description
December 2010. Norfolk NMP.
An area of World War Two possible underground storage chambers is visible on aerial photographs (S1) to the east of Bury Road, Thetford.
The site is centred on TL 8720 8204, and consists of a barbed wire fence protecting a rectangular area measuring approximately 300m by 300m within which there are five small rectangular fenced areas, each measuring approximately 10m by 6m. A sixth enclosure is visible to the south of the barbed wire fence. Each of these areas appears to contain an entrance to an underground structure, which is likely to have provided a storage facility, and the entire site is arranged around an elongated semicircular area, considered to have been used for horse training (Roger J. Thomas, pers. comm.). These features appear to have been removed by June 1946 (S2).
A possible weapons pit is also visible at TL 8733 8211.
E. Bales (NMP), 15 December 2010.
