Full Description
January 2011. Norfolk NMP.
A possible stretch of the Peddar's Way Roman Road, on a slightly different orientation to the formerly projected course (S2), is visible on aerial photographs (S1) running from TL 9411 8380 to TL 9390 8467, to the north and south of the River Thet, Brettenham. It has been recorded separately to avoid confusion, as it is possible that this represents a later feature, but it is visible as cropmarks of a bank at the southern end, and a possible ditch feature from TL 9410 8385 to TL 9407 8397. It is also possible that this southernmost stretch of ditch is part of a curving drainage feature visible to the southwest, but it has been recorded as it follows the alignment of the more convincing ditch cropmarks to the north of the river, from TL 9403 8409 to at least TL 9390 8462. These ditches run through the eastern half of Brettenham Roman town (NHER 5653), although it is difficult to be clear about their relationship with the features visible therein.
E. Bales (NMP), 19 January 2011.
