NHER 6153 (Monument record) - Bronze Age barrow and Early Saxon inhumation

1936.
Excavation of round barrow by J. E. Sainty (NCM) and A. Q. Watson (NCM).
NCM Beaker card originally had 'sherds of B2 Beaker' later altered by R. R. Clarke (NCM) to 'globular' on (S1) but not on Beaker card.
(S2) has '2 collared urns'.
Barrow about 1.8m high at west side; diameter 8.2m and length 16.4m.
Partly ploughed away from west side.
No ditch, almost level with field on the east side.
Broken fragments of Bronze Age pottery, also an Early Saxon spear and shield boss as secondary inhumation.
3 flint flakes, one rusted onto spearhead.

Spread of coarse gravel and cobbles.
No apparent mound.
2m drop from east field to west.
Looks more like utilised natural deposite of glacial gravel.
Ploughed.

Not destroyed after all, still fairly conspicuous in hedge.
Under hummocky grass on esker like ridge.

Mound scrub covered, with hedge on summit.
Trees have been planted in ditch area to north and west, and partly on base.
Under Stewardship it is hoped hedge and trees will be cut and a 6m margin instituted to remove east part of mound from arable.

Scrub has been cut and some small trees removed.
One conifer still remaining will be cut soon.
Area to east has a margin of some 1m between ploughsoil and edge of mound.
This margin to be increased to cover the whole original area.

The remains of a Bronze Age Barrow can be clearly seen on OS 1994 aerial photographs (S6) and it can also just be determined on the RAF 1946 images (S7). On the 1994 aerial photographs it is apparent the parish boundary between Langham and Blakeney crosses the barrow, and on the Blakeney side the barrow appears to have been ploughed out completely (with the land still remaining under arable), while an earthwork still remains in Langham. The area of land in Langham can be seen to be under grassland with an area of trees to the north (all within land marking the boundary between two arable fields and the two parishes). (In the 1946 aerial photographs the site is located under the hedge (parish boundary) and between two arable fields). The site is centred at NGR TG0199 4113
