Map

February 2011. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a road of at least post medieval date, with possible earlier origins, and an associated trackway, are visible on aerial photographs on East Wretham Heath (S1-S3). The site is centred on TL 9058 8806. The possible road, which runs east west across the southern part of the area, may be that illustrated in Faden’s Map of 1797 (S4), bisecting East Wretham Field from Four Mile house in the west, although it is possible a the trackway to the north marked on the modern Ordnance Survey map relates to the road shown on Faden. A braided trackway is also visible to the immediate north of the possible road. It seems likely that both of these routes were originally associated with the movement of stock and could represent potentially early features in the landscape, similar to those recorded as NHER 53453. The possible road appears to intersect some possible ditch cropmarks, recorded as NHER 54592.
