Full Description
October 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey of proposed development site.
A number of magnetic anomalies of possible archaeological origin were observed including a rectilinear feature that could represent a ditch and a number of anomalies that could indicate pit-type features.
See report (S1) for further details.
S. Howard (HES), 22 February 2011.
June 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Contexts 1001-1019.
Trial trenching revealed that some of those anomalies observed as a result of geophysical survey related to modern drains and a rubbish pit, whilst a more subtle spread of magnetic debris was found to mask a number of ditch features, two of which contained Thetford ware pottery dating to the 10th-12th century.
See report (S2) for further details.

May 2012. Excavation.
Excavation in the vicinity of the ditches identified during the 2011 evaluation recorded a timber-lined well, four ditches, eight pits, three gullies, and a post hole. Seven of these features could not be dated, but the remainder were dated to the medieval period. A group of intercutting features in the south of the excavated area contained Grimston-Thetford ware and Early Medieval sandy wares, dating these features to the late 11th to 12th century. The well was located in the north of the excavated area, where the water table is known to be quite high. It appears to have been in use in the early medieval period and was in-filled in the 13th to 14th century, after which it was cut by several ditches which may have enclosed tofts or crofts.
