Map

Former site of Eagle Iron Works, later the Oliver Rix Engineering firm, which specialised in farm implements and trailers. Balance sheets from December 1917 give the earliest fixed date for the firm, although a 1965 obituary in the EDP claims it was started 'over a hundred years ago'. The Eagle Iron Works is marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition map of the late 19th century (S1). After 1950 the firm held the Royal Appointment to King George VI and Elizabeth II as supplier of agricultural machinery.
In more recent years the firm moved aross to eastern side of the road. The map location has been amended to reflect the earlier Eagle Iron Works site. The earlier site now lies under a modern housing development called Foundry Close.
