Full Description
Before 2 April 2009. Stray find.
Fragment of stone shafthole implement with hour glass perforation found on land of Heygate Farms. See file for full description by P. Robins (NCM). The land of Heygate Farms extends to the west and south-west of Swaffham, with farm building at Town Farm (TF 79 08) and Snails Pit Farm (TF 81 07).
These objects are commonly referred to as either mace heads or hammers. The simple forms such as this example (where the hole has been created by pecking rather than drilling) are not closely datable, examples having been found in both Mesolithic and later prehistoric contexts.
A. Rogerson (HES), 31 March 2011. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 3 June 2013.
