Full Description
April 2011. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two searchlight or anti-aircraft battery site is visible on aerial photographs (S1) on land to the south of Whitehouse Farm, East Carleton. It appears to be a temporary structure, the probable remnants of which are only visible in1942, any trace having been removed by 1946 (S2).
The 1942 photograph appears to show a circular earthwork bank, approximately 15m in external diameter, centred on TG 1748 0175, surrounded by a number of possible former tracks and other possible earthwork banks or structure footings. The longest of the tracks leads from the centre of the field to the north-east corner, where there are a number of possible hut structures, centred on TG 1753 0182. It is difficult to characterise the exact nature of the site, but it would certainly appear to be a temporary World War Two emplacement of some kind.
Just over 350m to the south of here, a series of small heaps of material are visible on aerial photographs (S3) placed at regular intervals either side of Spong Lane, stretching from TG 1839 0121 to TG 1715 0131. It is possible that this material represents dispersed storage, as recorded elsewhere during World War Two, although it is only visible on photographs from 1946, and may in fact be related to material for road repairs.
