Map

April 2011. Norfolk NMP.
An undated linear earthwork ditch and possible World War Two training site are visible on aerial photographs on land to the south of Rectory Road, East Carleton.
The earthwork ditch is undated, not being visible on the Tithe or historic maps of the area, but it is possible that it represents a medieval to post medieval hollow way, 5.9m in width, running from TG 1798 0174 to TG 1802 0192.
An area of earthwork banks or upcast spoil is visible to the east, centred on TG 1806 0180. This disturbance is only visible in 1942 (S1), and has therefore been tentatively suggested as World War Two training activity, possible practice trench digging. This seems more likely in the light of a possible searchlight or anti-aircraft battery visible just over 400m to the west (NHER 54597).
E. Bales (NMP), 04 April 2011.
