Full Description
The first Welmore sluice was a 4-arched brick structure built in the 19th century. This was replaced by a more modern setup in 1931, providing a bridge and 2 sluice gates which is visible on RAF VAPs from 1946. This was further replaced in 1999 by a larger, 3 gate structure costing £5.3 million about 70 metres downriver which still stands today. The new gates protect around 32,000 hectares of fenland from the tidal Hundred Foot River.

The replacement of the 1931 structure in 1999 revealed what was believed to be the remains of the 1825 sluice. See letter in file from Cambridgeshire County Record Office and copies of photographs taken by a project engineer.
