Full Description
The bakery was believed to have been started in 1871 by a Mr. Bligh and continued by a Mr. Wilson in 1896. It was taken over by the Smith family in 1912. Lynn News interviewed Mr. Stan Smith (2nd generation Smith baker) in 1979.
Mr. Smith had been working in the bakery since 1932 at the age of 9. He had to quit during the Second World War and his father kept the business running until he returned. Mr. Smith delivered his produce personally by van around Lynn and the outlying villages. The business was sold in 1979 due to financial constraints and the unwillingness of his children to carry on the family business, a testament Mr. Smith says, to the dying individual tradesman.

When this bakery was visited by NIAS in 1978 it was considered one of the last small bakeries to be operating in West Norfolk. The bakehouse measured 24 feet by 21' 10". The oven measured 9'6" by 11' with internal dimensions of 9'4" square and a height of 15 inches. The oven weighed approximately 26 tons and was supplied by the Improved Coal Oven Company of Bristol.
The bakery closed on 25 March 1979, as reported in (S2). The building appears to have been converted to residential use.
