Map

This bakery was opened by William James Lusher in 1898 after working a much smaller bakery on Co-operative Street.
The bakery had the capacity to produce 800 loaves a day and still used the original oven built when the business opened. The oven was originally fired by solid fuel, likely wood or coal, but was later converted to burn oil. The furnace was located in a small basement which need to be climbed into to stoke it. Documents discovered by NIAS indicate that the business owned a Ford 17cwt (0.85 ton) custom made van purchased in 1969 for £761. In the 1970s the building was expanded and modernised, likely due to the expansion of the tourist trade in the area. This enabled a second oven to be installed upstairs. The business closed down on Christmas Eve 1999 due to competition from supermarkets and convenience stores. Directory entries in Kelly from 1916 to 1937 list Lusher William & Son, baker, High Street (S1).
