Map

Brick building with slate roof. Date stone reads "R.S. 1838". Large stone block set into top floor reads "WATTON BREWERY". The building is L shaped in plan and has 2 floors, with an extra floor on the south side. It is unclear when the brewery ceased, but NIAS recorded the building empty in 1974 and auction documents state that in recent years (to 1988) the premises was used as a printers. A photograph in the auction document (1988) shows the ground floor faces with modern windows, doors and shop fittings and the large chimney removed. At some point after this the site was bought and converted to flats, with the 'modern' brick lean-to extensions demolished to make car parking space.
The site is shown as "The Old Brewery" on modern maps and although it isn't labelled, the building is drawn on the 1st edition ordnance survey map (S1). The brewery business is listed in White's Directory (S2) in 1836, 1864, 1875 and 1904.
