Summary

Fragments of a possible prehistoric field system are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs. These cut across the field pattern depicted on modern and historic maps, and their orientation is also at odds with that of a large sub-rectangular enclosure (NHER 54638) with which they overlap. The latter is in part respected by the parish boundary and post medieval field pattern, which, together with its general character, size and shape, suggests that an Iron Age to Roman date is plausible. Given the apparent partial continuity in the landscape between the enclosure and the historic and modern field pattern, the field system is presumed to be the remnant of an earlier organisation of the landscape, therefore of prehistoric date. It is in fact reminiscent of some of the probable Bronze Age field systems identified in the Broads region of Norfolk, for example at Ormesby St Margaret (NHER 12828).

Fragments of a possible prehistoric field system are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 1133 0499. The cropmarks, which form an irregular, grid-like pattern, cut across the field boundaries depicted on modern and historic maps, and their orientation is also at odds with that of a large sub-rectangular enclosure (NHER 54638) with which they overlap. The latter is in part respected by the parish boundary and post medieval field pattern, which, together with its general character, size and shape, suggests that an Iron Age to Roman date is plausible.
