Summary

Evidence of a group of possible World War Two structures, presumably relating to military activity and/or civil defence, is visible as structures and concrete footings on aerial photographs. On photographs taken in 1946 the concrete building platforms and footings of six or possibly seven small rectangular structures are visible arrayed at intervals around the hedgeline of the field. An additional structure is visible extant in the southwest corner of the field. The function of the buildings is unclear, but the fact that in 1946 they had been recently removed, together with the form of the structures and their layout, is suggestive of a temporary military or defensive site associated with the recent war. A similar group of structures has also been recorded 375m to the southeast (NHER 54645).

Map

Evidence of a group of possible World War Two structures, presumably relating to military activity and/or civil defence, is visible as structures and concrete footings on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 1050 0237. On photographs taken in 1946 the concrete building platforms and footings of six or possibly seven small rectangular structures are visible arrayed at intervals around the hedgeline of the field. (The possible ‘impression’ of a former building mapped at TG 1050 0233 lacks any evidence of actual structural remains.) An additional structure is visible extant in the southwest corner of the field; this could be an unrelated building but its function is not clear. The function of the other, removed, buildings is also unclear, but the fact that in 1946 they had been recently removed, together with the form of the structures (which would have been the size of a typical military hut) and their siting along the hedgeline, is suggestive of a temporary military or defensive site associated with the recent war. They are unlikely to represent air raid shelters as they are located some distance from any large groups of people, whether at residential or industrial sites. A similar group of structures has also been recorded 375m to the southeast (NHER 54645).
