NHER 54647 (Monument record) - Site of possible World War Two huts

Possible World War Two huts, perhaps relating to a military presence, the Home Guard or civil defence, are visible as extant structures on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 1149 0166. They lie within a former quarry, at that time occupied by industrial buildings, only 100m to the north of another former area of quarrying used for World War Two military training (NHER 54647). Several of the structures have the curved profile typical of military huts (for example Nissen huts), and all give the impression of having been erected relatively recently; a trackway leading into the site and to each of the huts has also been well used. There is no other clear evidence of military or civil defence activity, however, and the huts could simply be part of the surrounding industrial site, perhaps removed from a nearby military site where they were no longer needed. The fact that an additional hut (not mapped) appears to have been erected between April (S2) and July (S3) 1946 supports this non-military interpretation of the structures.
