NHER 54646 (Monument record) - Site of World War Two military training activity

Evidence of World War Two military training activity, in the form of earthworks and structures relating to weapons pits, emplacements, slit trenches and a spigot mortar emplacement, is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 1161 0142. The features lay within a former quarry, now mostly occupied by a recreation ground. Only the most obvious features visible on the January 1946 photos (S1) have been mapped; the polygon defining the limits of the site defines the edge of the former quarry, within which there is potential to identify further World War Two features. The spigot mortar emplacement, which was sited at TG 1168 0150, on the upper edge of the quarry, overlooking the adjacent road to the north, could have formed part of Wymondham’s World War Two defences rather than being merely a training feature. Huts visible at an industrial site 100m to the north (NHER 54647) could be associated with related military or civil defence activity, but their military origin is questionable.
