Summary

A possible World War Two emplacement, presumably for a gun, or a weapons pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946. The site is located on The Fairfield, an area of open ground within Wymondham, and may have formed part of the town’s defences. It had been levelled by July 1946.

Map

July 2011. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two emplacement, presumably for a gun, or a weapons pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 1124 0135. The site is located on The Fairfield, an area of open ground within Wymondham, and presumably formed part of the town’s defences. The very neat and upright appearance of the bank surrounding the pit suggests that it may have been constructed of sandbags rather than earth. At the same time, although a military origin for the pit, which has a relatively ‘fresh’ appearance, is plausible, a non-military origin is also possible. It had been levelled by July 1946 (S3).
