Summary

Fieldwalking undertaken around 1992 identified several scatters of pottery sherds in this field. The date of this material is not entirely clear, although it is possible that both Iron Age and medieval sherds were recovered. A more systematic fieldwalking survey undertaken in 2010 recovered Roman, Early/Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery and a large assemblage of struck flint of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date including a core, flakes, blades and scrapers.

Map

1992. Fieldwalking.
This field is one of several in this area known to have been walked by [1] in around 1992. Unfortunately it is not known exactly what was found. A map produced by the finder [2] suggests that four discrete scatters of pottery were identified. It appears that one was identified as Iron Age and the other three as medieval (if the colour conventions are consistent with those used on maps produced following surveys at other locations).

January-May 2010. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey of proposed development area (Field 9).
The survey revealed Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval pottery and a large assemblage of struck flint of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date including a core, flakes, blades and scrapers.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
S. Howard (HES), 8 August 2011.
